Fucking Irene Khan

By calling Gitmo a "gulag," she made it easy for the right to just dismiss the entirety of the Amnesty report. For of love of god, haven't we learned this lesson yet? Dan Rather uses documents which aren't shown to be false in any way, but merely not substantiated enough (which, to be fair, they fucking weren't). He should've known better, but just that killed any mention of the TANG story. Newsweek cites an example of flushing the Quran down the toilet, and CNN has the headline "Detainees, not soldiers, flushed Quran" even though that particular charge was only a small part of the alleged abuse.

And by calling Gitmo the "gulag of our times," now simply by showing this to be the excessive hyperbole it is the entirety of the serious allegations leveled at us by Amnesty is flicked away like one might flick away a crotch crab. And it doesn't really matter that we might protest that that term wasn't in the body of the report and dismissing it doesn't address the actual allegations, because nobody's really listening to us. People used to listen to Amnesty. Now they won't, if only this time.

One small crab gets flicked away, and we can pretend we're not infested. And it's our own damn fault for it being in an easy to flick position.

Later: Thoughts on this fine piece.
